Plus when you're successful, you can't lie to yourself.

(Games can have it, but it quickly crushes the fun and enjoyment. Too harsh of penalties for random results and otherwise relying on successful random throws to be successful seems like poor game design. I once went through Sector 1 and 2 without seeing a single shop (despite hitting up as many beacons as I could). You can cruise to Sector 8 or you could lose in your second encounter in Sector 1 because they're got double missile launchers and you don't start with anything to combat that. In one game you could set a new record for scrap, and the next set a new low record for scrap, despite using the same strategies. Through no fault of your own you could end up deep into the game with only four crew, or only two weapons, or only one augmentation. In Faster than Light you need to get lucky enough to get the tools you need to handle each situation. Oregon Trail and Dungeons of Dredmore, as two examples, provide you with the tools you need, or enough chanced to get the tools you need, to handle the different situations you'll encounter. oh oh what about the engi ship that starts with 1 pilot and a few bots/drones! Such a different play through when using the engi ship that starts with ion. Should be enough to take down any shield so my beam can knock out 2 to 3 systems. This ship starts with a halberd beam which makes 1 shield enemies easy and just got quested a breach missile (4 damage and high chance of breaching the hull). I got a mantis on guard duty, 3 zoltans running engines, weapons and piloting.

The one with the harden shields and the crew who provides power to whatever system they're working. I feel this game is a 100% buy at 10bucks and the developers are worth supporting.Įdit: I'm currently using a zoltan ship. Minor things but it does feel like I can totally beat the boss on normal given enough luck and good choices.Īnd if he ever supplies more content (story, ships, races, quest, exploration, artifacts.) or opens it up to modding id jizz my pants.

Learning best how to group my weapons, judging when its best to run and what quest tend to be worth it, how to get the most jumps out of each sector, targeting and ship upgrades. I also feel as if i'm getting better and learning new tricks.

I've gotten to the second stage boss a hand full of times now and unlocked 2 more ships and 2 alts (all on normal) and they are different enough where it totally changes your strategies. I feel you and mostly agree but I still enjoy the game. But a boss battle that just fucks you in the ass for picking the wrong weapon? No fun. The randomness makes it very difficult you can die early just because you're not lucky enough to find a store or find a store with the type of items you need. Of course, you can unlock other ships, that in many ways are better than the initial Fed cruiser. I shudder to think what he's like on Normal difficulty. I jumped out once, repaired, and tried again, but it was no use. It's very unfair for the game to require a very limited set of items to defeat the end boss that you have no way of knowing you'll need in advance. But I didn't have that.Īnd that's unfair. Like the teleporting bomb, or maybe crew teleport and lots of crew. I had an ion cannon but it seemed ineffective.īasically, you need a completely different weapon to take out the Return of Boss Boss. I couldn't use my missiles because of the defense drone, and I couldn't take out the drone control because his level four shields regenerated too quickly. The drone and teleporting saboteurs will eat you up. And he's supposedly "damaged" but when he comes back he's in a completely different configuration, and he's got A BUNCH OF DRONES AND A DEFENSE DRONE. You see the boss comes back after you destroy him. But I handled him pretty well and blew him up without too much trouble thansk to my missiles. He's a big guy level four shields, four weapons, and a teleporting saboteur who is deadly. This morning I finally reached the boss battle in the last sector. It's a pretty good way to handle most of the enemies in the game. But that's okay you can use your beam weapons on drone control to knock it out and then use your missiles. They go right through shields the only thing that can stop them is a defense drone. Missiles are pretty much the best weapon in the game. But there's an Easy mode, so I've taken to playing that.

The main problem on Normal difficulty is there's just not enough scrap to upgrade your ship and buy repairs and supplies and so on. A lot of games are too easy today, and it's nice to have a challenge.
